Jair Bolsonaro detained after being considered a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was convicted of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns

In a document approving the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's determination was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of planning to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will have a custody hearing on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing the former president's case.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the armed forces officials. His successor was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
