The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.
"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
