UK Expands Methanol Poisoning Alert Roster with Eleven Destinations
The UK government has placed an additional eleven new countries to its public advisory list regarding the risks of industrial alcohol poisoning from adulterated spirits.
The revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of methanol contamination.
Just recently, officials had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, following a number of high-profile cases including the tragic demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that even small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12–48 hours.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and How is it Utilized?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful substance commonly used in coolant, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. It is not designed for drinking.
While it is generated during the production of spirits, licensed producers bring it down to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the distillation process.
However in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Government Recommendations for Travelers
Foreign Office official Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"When you are drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to well-known venues and refrain from unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"In case something appears suspicious, like a headache that's far more intense than typical or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The full register of countries noted as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
