Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Law enforcement report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in connection with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative commented the incident left him without words and required to be addressed quickly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
