Youth Found Dead Following False Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One teenage boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly blamed of stealing the ashes of a deceased infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's parents discovered his body in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.
False Allegations Begin
The investigation learned how his mother got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The communication added: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her baby's remains had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from police later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was never stolen in the beginning".
News coverage about the supposed stolen remains attracted social media comments, and although Kai was not identified in the messages, his parent said people "knew it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she said.
Mental Health Impact
She added that Kai had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' views really were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had not contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son told her he had gone into the residence because the woman who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being bullied online after the allegations.
The inquest learned that one 19-year-old urged the teenager to kill himself.
She had no worries on the evening before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest received testimony from educational staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she rang the family's parents' landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the accusations.
The proceedings heard his parents said they did not got that message.
Formal Finding
Senior investigator informed the inquest he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a narrative conclusion, he said: "Approximately 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the police and after his questioning he was freed while investigations proceeded."
The official concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any agency caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted action it is impossible to determine his intent."
